Supporting Equine Tendons
Horse tendon injuries and conditions can be a common concern and issue for performance horses. Promoting proper health and wellness for equine tendons is important. Here are some natural options to promote the overall well being of equine tendons, along with some options for naturally supporting horse tendon injuries and conditions.
Equine Tendons and Ligaments Defined
Tendons are flexible but inelastic cords of strong fibrous collagen tissue attaching a muscle to a bone. Ligaments are a short band of tough, flexible, fibrous connective tissue that connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint. (The information in this post can be used for horse ligament support as well.) For more detailed information on tendon anatomy, function, and tendon sheath click here.
Causes of Horse Tendon Injury:
- Excessive Strain
- Improper physical conditioning
- Bad footing where the horse has to strain, slips, or overworks itself
- Confirmation. If the horse has long, sloping pasterns and a long-toe, low-heel shape it can predispose a horse to tendinitis
- Direct trauma or the horse interferes with itself
- Improper trimming and shoeing.
The factors above are something to observe and note if you start to experience horse tendon conditions.
Proper nutrition and digestion are going to play a major role in supporting horses especially those who are considered at risk. Making sure your horse is getting the proper balance of water, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals is always essential to maintaining and promoting balance and health.
Knowing your horse’s normal is very important to be able to spot tendon concerns early. By regularly palpating your horse’s legs and observing temperature, bumps, swellings, etc. you can get a feel for when something isn’t right and when you need to seek veterinary care and alternative therapy support before major horse tendon and ligament injuries occur.
Supplements for Horse Tendon Health
When looking for a supplement to support equine tendons, we recommend looking for supplements that contain collagen and MSM. Be sure to check that your supplement is free from toxic ingredients and unnecessary fillers. We recommend ForeJoint, AllStar, Sulfurzyme, or BLM for clean organic options to supplement your horse. If your horse is a performance horse or if you think your horse is at risk, we highly recommend supplementing as a health-promoting measure. If your horse currently has tendon conditions or issues it is important to offer support for repair and healing.
Topical Support for Equine Tendons
Lemongrass essential oil is a great option to apply topically for supporting the health and wellness of equine tendons and ligaments. Be sure you are using a therapeutic grade essential oil. Not all oils are the same!
Aroma Siez blend is a great choice for horse tendon support. The single essential oils in Aroma Siez include Basil, Marjoram, Peppermint, and Cypress. It is a favorite here at Equine Essential Wellness! I like to use Aroma Siez during most of my alternative therapy sessions because it eases tension and can be calming and relaxing as well.
If you are looking to cover some larger areas or rub up and down the entire leg I would choose Ortho Ease or Ortho Sport. These are great massage oil choices to use as an effective essential oil liniment for horses. Natural liniments can provide great support for horse tendons, ligaments, and muscles.
Additional options for using essential oils to support horse tendons can be to add them in a clay poultice or use it in combination with standing wraps. The Animal Scents Ointment is also a great option to lengthen the application of the essential oils you choose to use.
Other Products to Aide with Horse Tendon Injuries
Using polo wraps or horse tendon boots during performance is great external support for equine tendons. If you need additional therapy options to support repair and healing of injured equine tendons check out products like Back on Track or Ice Horse.
