Is Your Horse Experiencing Recurring Patterns of Health Concern?
About 3 years ago my horse Peppy experienced a severe impaction colic that almost took his life. I shared about this is the blog post Knowing Your Horse’s Normal to Prevent Catastrophe. What I didn’t blog about up until now was the fact the same date, one year later he showed signs of colic again…
Being in the natural horse care industry for over a decade, I have seen this type of situation many times before. Although I have seen little information covering it or bringing awareness to it. This is likely due to the fact it seems hokey, strange, and is likely not something to scientifically quantify. For me I have experienced it personally and seen it in enough dogs and horses through my career I am not concerned with additional proof.
The Unseen Can be the Most Powerful
In our world, the things unseen and even the least understood things are the most powerful. Think of electricity for example or how about the immune system or true immunity…
Our horses are not different from us in the aspect that they exist among multiple planes. There are physical, mental, and emotional planes. For some of you, you can also believe and resonate with the fact they have a spiritual plane too… while for others of you that is a stretch. Which is okay. Let’s focus on the previous more widely accepted three.
Your horse’s emotional and mental planes just like ours have an impact on the physical plane. Their innate characteristics, environment, training, exposure, and often herd will influence a great deal of what is expressed through their behavior and will be connected to their health and well-being.
For Peppy, I am not certain why this colic recurred, but understanding what I just explained to you. I knew it was likely mental and emotional expression through the physical. I did not merely call coincidence that the same day one year later we had a “groundhog’s day” event.
Clearing the Cause to Eliminate the Effect-
I supported Peppy with a personal protocol of care that I revert to for my horses during a time of suspected colic, but I also decided to offer additional care for clearing emotions and trauma, mentally and emotionally that he might be experiencing. For me this consisted of utilizing essential oils, you can learn more about why I choose essential oils for emotional balance from our post Horses Emotions and their Effects on Horse Behavior and Health.
Within a few hours of offering Peppy this support, he was functioning normally and no further care or medical attention was needed. This year was in a way a test, to see if we cleared the trigger or if it would recur again. Thankfully there was no sign of any symptoms, concern, or alarm.
Awareness, Support, and Change-
I share this in hopes to bring awareness of the possibility of recurring health concern for those who have never experienced it, or know that it can happen. To support those who have, so you might feel less crazy or alone in the thought and belief. Lastly in hopes of clearing and changing this pattern for any horse owner ready to support their horse through it.
If you notice yourself saying “this time of year my horse _____” or “at events my horse always _____”. It is likely your horse is stuck in a recurring pattern that with the right tools you could be empowered to clear and support them through. The truth is if your horse isn’t greeting you at the gate, is resistant or dull to your cues, or is experiencing negative health conditions… It isn’t your fault. And contrary to what some vets and equine professionals might lead you to believe, it certainly isn’t normal!
It’s time revolutionize the way you think about and approach your horse’s care and lifestyle; equipping you with the tools and information you need to optimize your horse’s performance, reinvigorating their zest for life, and accessing the “horseplay” and exuberance they are naturally known for.
