Promoting Horse Health – Aural Plaque
Aural plaque in horses is a topic that was inquired about by a horse owner on our Facebook page. In response, we have created content to help horse owners learn more about this health concern. We did a week of featured blog posts on our regular blog. Then added bonus content for the members of our Equine Wellness Group.
For this member exclusive post we would like to take a more in-depth look at why we recommended Frankincense and Young Living Longevity blend for horses experiencing aural plaque.
Selecting Essentials Oils Based on Their Chemistry
Learning some basics of essential oil chemistry or investing in resources to help you select your essential oils based on chemistry can improve your results in relation to promoting horse health. Resources like our Horse Health Hub Community and The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple by David Stewart Ph.D., D.N.M. are a great start.
One of the ways that essential oils are so effective for promoting horse health is their chemical make up of phenolics, sesquiterpenes, and monoterpenes. Phenolics clean the receptor sites of cells, sesquiterpenes delete bad information from cell memory (DNA), and monoterpenes restore the correct information in the cell memory (DNA). Frankincense essential oil is high in monoterpenes. Monoterpenes have many health-promoting benefits but for aural plaque will support balance and aide in restoration of the DNA.
“Papillomas are common, benign, viral-induced epithelial neoplasms of the horse. There are presently three forms of cutaneous viral papillomas recognized in horses. Presumably these three very different clinicopathologic syndromes are caused by different types of papilloma viruses (DNA papovaviruses).”

Aural Plaque in Horses Utilize an Essential Oil Powerhouse Blend
Young Living Longevity blend is another essential oil we recommend for horses experiencing aural plaque. This blend combines thyme, orange, clove, and frankincense together. Longevity is a favorite essential oil blend that I have experienced success with over the years.
For application ideas. I would start dietary, with either or both Frankincense and Longevity, by adding a few drops (1 to 3 drops) in grain or a cookie. Topically, I would utilize Frankincense, and if the horse is sensitive around the ears apply at the poll, along the neck, and where the breast collar would be. Because of their chemistry, you will still get benefits from using them even if you never apply them to the lesions themselves. That said DO NOT drop essential oils into the horse’s ears. If you decide to apply them to the lesions place a few drops on your hands, rub them together, then apply.
It is our mission here at Equine Essential Wellness to help you promote your horse’s health naturally. To be successful in improving your horse’s health it is crucial to put your focus on fostering health, not fighting disease. This may sound simple and common but in this day and age it is not. So much time and attention is put on the problems and concerns instead of the solutions.
