Promote Horse Health and Control Parasites Naturally
I read a great article a while back titled, The Future of Parasite Control by Martin K. Nielsen DVM, PhD, DEVPC, DACVM from the September 2015 Equus Magazine. In the article, he mentions how it is becoming accepted and understood that the traditional method of chemical deworming is not only creating “super parasites” but is not as effective as once believed. I was relieved to read this and hope that this new understanding is spreading quicker then I realize. I know in the area I live in it is still a very supported theory and concept.
For those who have been reading my posts and see my holistic approach to my horses, you won’t be surprised when I admit that I have not used chemical wormers as a method for parasite control in a long time.
Support Proper Equine Digestion and use Natural Parasite Control for Horses
My approach to parasite control is to support and maintain proper digestive function and add natural remedies that create an undesirable environment for the parasites. For me, I prefer using essential oils, but believe that herbal options are great too!
To ensure that your natural methods are working effectively you can have your veterinarian do fecal egg counts periodically. I am a true believer in natural remedies but in some cases and situations, a chemical option may be required. Without the proper screening and follow-through, the unknown can be catastrophic to your horse’s health. So if you choose a natural route be consistent and responsible to check up on how the horse is “responding” and that it is effectively keeping the parasites under control.

Combining a few drops of any of these essential oil options with a good digestive supplement with prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes, would be a great natural way to support proper equine digestion and natural parasite control.
